Ofcom aims to simply charging structures for Non-Geographic number ranges
Ofcom has announced that it intends to simplify the charge controls on all Non-Geograpgic number ranges, but these proposals may not come into effect for another 2 years, according to the telecoms industry regulator. These proposals are in response to consumer confusion on certain types of numbers and its aim is to attempt to improve consumer confidence when dialling certain numbers.
The principle change centres around the 08 number range. These numbers are currently labelled as Freephone numbers, but when called from a mobile phone network, they are classed as premium rate numbers with some networks charging as much as £2.50 / minute.
Freecall numbers such as Cable & Wireless 0500 numbers and 0808 business telephone numbers are also to be incorporated under these proposals.
The principle changes on numbers are as follows:-
01/02/03 – the first two are classified as geographic numbers and 03 number ranges are non-geographic number ranges but are linked to the geographic number ranges (01/02 number).
07 numbers – mobile rates;
0800 number – free to dial from landlines and mobile numbers and networks;
0842, 0843, 0844 and 0845 numbers and 0871, 0872 and 0873 - business rates, charged at lower cost; and
090/ 091/098 - premium rated numbers, these are a higher cost.
